Families that are dealing with a serious illness are often challenged by the many facets of the physical, emotional and spiritual rollercoaster that are associated with their condition.

Hospice care focuses on treating symptoms and relieving pain from a serious illness, lifting the burdens people may face, allowing them to focus on family and friends. Care from hospice professionals is given in the comfort of a person’s home, nursing home or assisted living facility. A hospice team tailors its care around each individual’s specific needs.

Hospice Care of America is led by Dr. Michael Werckle, medical director, who works closely with the primary care physician regarding care and treatment, to maintain the physician-patient relationship.

The hospice team is comprised of a nurse practitioner, registered nurse, respiratory therapist, home health aide, social worker, chaplain and volunteers.

Hospice offers personal care assistance, counseling and therapies, and provides medications and any medical equipment needed in the home.

In addition, grief counseling and support are offered for families throughout the process, and for up to 13 months following the death of a loved one.

Hospice is covered by Medicare and Medicaid, most private insurance plans and HMOs, and other managed care organizations.
